A question... Saturday, April 28, 2001
Alright, at District this weekend, there were two girls competing in HI and DI... (Humourous Interp and Dramatic Interp) the definition for how judges should rate contestants, is based on their voice inflections in conveying the message of the piece... the two girls are deaf, and can't speak...

NFL stated that they couldn't compete, because of the rules... so they sued the NFL, and had a federal court hearing on it...

Because of this, HI and DI are now postponded for almost a month...

what are your opinions on this?

personally, my feelings are, that while I'm impressed that they want to compete, and I wont deny the importance of humourus and dramatic acting for deaf people... I don't think they should be competing at a speech tournament... I'm going to quote Brian... "You don't see people in wheelchairs suing to play football."

Maybe I'm just being a jerk... but the fact is, judges can't understand their pieces, but certainly wont give them last out of pity...

Please share...

In my opinion, they're asking for it. They know they are deaf and cannot speak, yet they are trying to compete at a SPEECH tournament. In a way, I am sorry for them because I wish they could speak and compete, but that's not going to change the fact that they can't. If they competed, the NFL would have to create another grading system for them to compete on, thus making the system unfair for both "parties" because they would be competing and placed against each other, yet graded differently.

the girls may not have been very "logical", but i still feel really sorry for them. Because they're born "different" (absolutely NOTHING they could do about it) and now all these people are forcing them to acknowledge that

Yeah, exactly... just like how they have special competitions for track for people in wheelchairs. (Wheelchair races)

people in wheelchairs play basketball, but it's against other people in wheelchairs. Maybe they should have a thing like that for those girls where the variables are the same. Cuz the variables in these situations are too different yeah

I would agree with you guys... by definition, speech is the act of speaking... so if you can't speak, you can't really compete in a speech tournament. Perhaps debating would be alright, although I know some parts of that grade on how well you speak as well... so I dunno...

But yeah, that would be like... uh... yeah... guys in wheelchairs trying to play football. =)
